Vanilla House is situated at the heart of the entrance of the beautiful Black River Gorges nature reserve and the area is definitely worth visiting for all hiking and walking enthusiasts as well as nature lovers. The road to the parking area is 5 km from Vanilla House and is great for jogging or bike riding. Once you get to the parking lot you have the choice of a number of trails and there is an imformation centre to assist you further.
The trails are: Parakeet, La Plaine Champagne, Le Piton de la Rivière Noire. The trails vary in degrees of difficulty and it is important to ensure you equipped with the correct clothing and shows and that you take plenty of water with you. There is also a visitors centre located at Petrin.
Black River Gorge National Park is the largest of its kind in Mauritius. The area extends from the Black River area up into the central highlands, making it much cooler than other parts of the island. The park covers an area of 6,754 hectares. The area is home to over 300 species of native and endemic flowering plants and 9 species of birds, which are unique to Mauritius. The panoramic views are breathtaking and the many waterfalls make the visit very worthwhile.
20 km from Vanilla house, Casela started as a bird aviary but now offers a great variety of thrilling excursions and activities; including wild animal encounters. The park is home to over 1500 birds, lions, zebras, giant tor- toises, giraffe, long tailed monkeys, camel, rhino, tigers, impala and many other animals. Casela also offers game drives, quad biking, zip lining, can- yoning and segway rides. There is a restaurant, which is an ideal place to take a break and enjoy the beautiful view of the west coast. A delightful scenic coastal route that extends right around the southern part of the island through interesting villages of Le Morne, Baie du Cap / Bel Ombre is very pleasurable. Enjoy local, authentic cuisine from one the many different restaurants or street vendors along the way or simply pack a picnic and enjoy one of the fabulous grassed areas where the beautiful blue ocean laps onto the white sands.
This village lies in the Black River District and is about 20kms from Vanilla House. It is named after the Frenchman Charles Antoine de Chazal de Chamarel, who lived in the area around 1800. Today it is primarily known for its scenic locations and nature and for its locally grown coffee. Chamarel’s beautiful church Saint Anna was built is 1876. You can also enjoy breathtaking views of the lagoon while eating at one of the many lovely restaurants tucked away in the lush vegetation of the region.
Is one of the rare distilleries still used to cultivate its own sugar cane. The cane is grown exclusively for the production of the Chameral flavoured rums. A guided tour of the rummery, which includes rum tasting, followed by lunch in the superb restaurant is a fabulous way to spend a day in Chameral. The natural surroundings are magnificent.
The highest waterfall in Mauritius plunges more than 85 meters down against a scenic backdrop of the Black River Nature Reserve. This is simply one of the most beautiful waterfalls of Mauritius. The three distinct streams of water plunging down into the gorge form part of the St. Denis River. The waterfall can be viewed from the upper deck situated at the Chamarel Seven Coloured Earth reserve, or, you can head down the trail to enjoy shallow water swimming at the bottom of the falls. Wild monkeys frequent the area. Although harmless, it is best to avoid leaving your belongings unattended as the monkeys will be happy to snatch your things. Be sure to look out for the bird of Mauritius, the Paille en Queue, flying high in the skies above the falls.
Located in the Chamarel Village, a very typical Creole village, you can visit the 7 coloured earths, which is a geological phenomenon unique to Mauritius.

It is a crater lake situated in a secluded mountain area in the district of Savanne, deep in the heart of Mauritius. It is about 1800 feet above sea level. The first group of pilgrims who went to Ganga Talao were from the village of Triolet and it was led by Pandit Giri Gossayne from Terre Rouge in 1898. It is considered the most sacred Hindu place in Mauritius. There is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and other Gods including Lord Hanuman, Goddess Lakshmi, and others along the Grand Bassin.
During Shivaratri, many pilgrims in Mauritius walk bare feet from their homes to the lake. On the weekends, local food can be enjoyed from the street vendors.
This 250-hectare tea factory and museum is located about 12km north of Rivière des Anguilles. This plantation is the first in Mauritius dating back to 1892. An hour-long tour of the tea-processing facility is followed by a look at a small exhibition space sharing the history of Mauritian tea. The highlight of the visit has to be the tea tasting session at which a variety of flavoured teas are on offer to taste at your heart’s content. Pancakes, waffles and ice-cream make a welcome accompaniment. If you are still hungry, Le Bois Chéri Restaurant offers a charming hill top setting with panoramic views of the south coast of the island.
